Thomas to aid in publication of previously-unknown Alfred Hill String Quartet he discovered

Thomas, in collaboration with musicologist Donald Maurice (Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand) and publisher Allan Stiles, will write the forward of an edition of the “Lento sostenuto, Menuett, Andante, and Scherzo” for String Quartet, an early student work of the New Zealand composer Alfred Hill (1869-1960). Aided by Columbia University’s Evans Traveling Fellowship, Thomas traveled to Australia and New Zealand in June of 2018 to research Hill and the Maori music that influenced a number of his compositions. While there, he came across an incomplete string quartet manuscript from Hill’s student years that had been found by the composer’s great-granddaughter, which Thomas realized was the missing piece of a second fragmentary manuscript held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney. His research has allowed for a reconstruction of the string quartet in question, a piece which has been un-performable until now . Donald Maurice will be recording the world premiere of the work with the Dominion String Quartet, who has recorded Hill’s other chamber music for the Naxos label.
